Explore the Universe

I've known about this for some time now, but I never realized how amazing it was until I just tried it out now. The WorldWide Telescope from Microsoft Research lets you explore the universe on your PC. I just got done navigating through the entire solar system, checking out all sides of planet Earth, and looking at the view of the moon from Apollo 12. Absolutely incredible!

Still not convinced it's worth installing? Check out the tour. I think you'll be impressed.

Here are a few photos I took during my exploration...

2008 Summer Olympics Coverage

If you have a Windows Vista version that has Media Center (i.e. Home Premium or Ultimate) you can watch the Olympics by launching Media Center and scrolling to the Online Media category and choosing NBC Olympics. This will work even if you don't have your PC hooked up with a TV Tuner card.

Alternatively, go to www.NBCOlympics.com to stream it online. Have fun!

Gas Prices in the USA

Gas is getting expensive these days. I know, not as expensive for me as it is for people in other places, but still.

Anyhow, here is a tool I discovered for those in the US. Just type in your zip code and voila, it'll show you today's best gas prices (and worst!) in your area.

The Last Supper in Detail

This is quite nice: http://www.haltadefinizione.com/en/cenacolo/look.asp. The Last Supper is available for viewing online in high-quality.

There is an interesting debate as to whether the person on the right (viewer's left) of Jesus is Apostle John or Mary Magdalene. It certainly looks like a woman to me, but apparently it wasn't uncommon to paint males with feminine qualities as female-looking. There is more on that here under 'Legends and alternative theories'.

I couldn't immediately think of anyone to forward it to so I figured someone out there reading my blog might know or be someone who would find it useful.

New Dance Moves from the ATL

A friend of a friend was just recently visiting Seattle and was generous enough to educate all of us up here on what's new from down south--Atlanta to be exact. If you're more up on the club culture than I am these days then you may already know about the "snap dance", "lean wit it rock wit it", "poole palace", and "westside walk". Here are a few vidz to check it out if you're interested:

Encyclopedia of Life

I think this is a really neat idea: http://www.eol.org. (Encyclopedia of Life) I just hope that it becomes available soon.

<<start of snip>>
Comprehensive, collaborative, ever-growing, and personalized, the Encyclopedia of Life is an ecosystem of websites that makes all key information about life on Earth accessible to anyone, anywhere in the world. Our goal is to create a constantly evolving encyclopedia that lives on the Internet, with contributions from scientists and amateurs alike. To transform the science of biology, and inspire a new generation of scientists, by aggregating all known data about every living species. And ultimately, to increase our collective understanding of life on Earth, and safeguard the richest possible spectrum of biodiversity.

Some Good Hockey

Well, my hockey team, the Monarchs, happened to win the Greater Seattle Hockey League (GSHL) division 2 championships this year.

If you want to watch some good hockey and aren't able to come to one of our games (jokes), here is a collection of clips that one of my teammates put together. Sorry, none of them are us but you'll get a pretty good idea of what it'd be like. ;)

Celebrate Black History Month

Black History Month Background
The observance was established as Negro History Week in 1926. That's when Carter G. Woodson, the man called the father of Black History Month, picked February and chose the week of Feb. 12 and 14th – the birthdates of President Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, the freed slave and abolitionist – to honor the accomplishments of African-Americans. In the 1970s, the week was expanded to a month.

Driving Across Europe Using Vegetable Oil

[7-Nov-2006 Fixed mispelling...]
This isn't the first time I've heard of using vegetable oil as a fuel alternative to diesel, but this is definitely the first time I've heard about an ordinary man modifying his car and doing it. Well, maybe he's not such an ordinary man afterall. Antony Berreti, an Open University student just like me, drove across Europe, the long way, using nothing but free vegetable oil that he was given by restaurants and stores along the way. Check out the details of his trip and more information on using vegatable oil as fuel here: http://www.macharsoft.co.uk/rmp/freefuel.html.

How Tea is Made

I'm not really a tea drinker myself although I do enjoy the derivative of it usually referred to as chai, short for masala chai. Oddly enough, I find it interesting to know the difference between the different types of teas out there such as white tea, black tea, green tea, and oolong tea. I came across this interesting brochure from a tea store named Teavana that explains the process for making each of these types so I thought I would share it here in case anyone else finds it as informative as I do. They are actually all made from the same type of tea leaves.

Soccer Season Commencement

Soccer (a.k.a. football in many other countries) is the only sport I kept up with while I was away in Haifa. However, it has been many years since I played in a league and played for a team so I decided to get back into it this year. I've landed myself a spot on a really great team called Africans United. Luckily, for me, they didn't limit my qualification based on land of birth, family origin, or nationality.

We had our first official game of the season last Friday, played well, and won. We also sported our fresh new jerseys and socks. Have a look below. (Our team is so nice we even let the person taking the photo be in the picture.)

Plan Your Next Trip to Outer-space

Commercial space stations are appearing all over the planet these days. This is something else I read in Wired Magazine and find really cool:

  • Mojave Spaceport - Virgin Galactic's $200,000 two-hour suborbital space flights will begin launching from Mojave in 2009.
  • Spaceport Washington - Several aerospace companies are testing spacecraft at Moses Lake. Tourists could blast off from here in the next five years.
  • Oklahoma Spaceport - Rocketplane hopes by 2008 to take passengers on 45-minute flights that include three to four minutes of weightlessness.
  • Esrange - Swedish officials are in talks to make their spaceport a launch site for Virgin Galactic. Trips are planned for 2013.
  • Baikonur Cosmodrome - From the birthplace of space tourism, Space Adventures hopes to send passengers around the moon in 2009.
  • Ras Al-Khaimah - Space Adventures will take tourists on 90-minute, $100,000 suborbital flights from the UAE to the edge of space.
  • Spaceport Singapore - A Singapore-based consortium has partnered with Space Adventures to build the first private spaceport in Asia.

By the way, if you haven't heard already... Pluto is no longer a planet: http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/space/08/24/pluto.ap/...

Deadliest Poisons in the World

Now this might not be such a pleasant topic for some people, but I find it interesting for some reason. I just recently read an article in Wired Magazine that discussed the ten most poisonous substances in the world and their affects:

  1. Botulinum (ingested)
It's hard to rank the lethality of toxins, but experts agree that botulinum - several orders of magnitude deadlier than sarin - is the gold standard. Your nervous system fails and you die in extreme pain. Works miracles on wrinkles, though.
  2. Ricin (ingested or inhaled)
Made from the lowly castor bean, ricin causes respiratory and organ failure, followed by death within hours. Even chewing a few beans can kill you.
  3. Anthrax (inhaled)
Cutaneous exposure can kill, but the most deadly, panic-inspiring form of anthrax is inhaled. It starts with flu that doesn't get better - then your respiratory system collapses.
  4. Sarin (inhaled)
Sarin is one of the deadliest nerve gases, hundreds of times more toxic than cyanide. Just one whiff and you'll foam at the mouth, fall into a coma, and die. Originally synthesized for use as a pesticide, it was outlawed as a warfare agent in 1997.
  5. Tetrodotoxin (ingested)
Found in the organs of puffer fish (the famous Japanese delicacy fugu), tetrodotoxin persists even after the fish is cooked. If the toxin is consumed, paralysis and death can strike within six hours. Up to five Japanese die from badly prepared fugu every year.
  6. Cyanide (ingested or inhaled)
Cyanide exists in a number of lethal forms that are present in nature or easily manufactured. Exposure leads to seizures, cardiac arrest, and death within minutes.
  7. Mercury (inhaled)
Low levels of mercury are not especially toxic to adults. However, inhaled mercury vapor (the metal starts turning to a gas at room temp) attacks the brain and lungs, shutting down the central nervous system.
  8. Strychnine (ingested or inhaled)
A common pesticide, strychnine isn't as  toxic as other poisons on our list, but it gets style points for causing one of the most horrific deaths of all: Every muscle in your body spasms violently until you die from exhaustion.
  9. Amatoxin (ingested)
Derived from the death cap family of mushrooms, amatoxin destroys your liver and kidneys over several days. You remain conscious - and in excruciating pain - until you slip into a coma and expire.
  10. Compound 1080 (ingested or inhaled)
As an animal poison, compound 1080 proved a little too effective: The bodies of creatures killed with 1080 remain poisonous for up to a year. Odorless, tasteless, water soluble, and without antidote, 1080 blocks cellular metabolism, leading to a quick yet painful death.

Wanderers of the World Unite

WorldWiki has just recently launched. Its aim is to be an international resource where anyone can share or find information about a place they've been or would like to visit. Since the site is currently in its early stages there are still lots of places that could benefit from people's contributions. However, some of its city wikis have been around longer and already have a lot to offer: San Francisco, London, Boston, Vancouver.

Next, if you are as fed up with the middleman currency exchange rates like I am, then you may find MoneyTwins to be a good alternative. The idea behind this currency exchange service is to trade directly with others who need the currency you have and have the currency you want. I personally have not tried this out yet so I caution you to be careful with how you go about trading the money once you find a match. I would hope that the site includes some neutral procedure that protects both parties from losing anything, but I can imagine that this might also just be left up to the individuals taking part in the transaction. If anyone out there has experience using the website, please share.

Beckham, Ronaldo, Profesional Drifters, and Matisyahu

What in the world do all these people have in common? Two things: they're all renown for providing "edge-of-your-seat" entertainment and they're all coming to Washington state.

August 9, 2006 8pm @ Qwest Field in Seattle - Real Madrid vs. D.C. United Soccer Match:
In addition to the most recognized athlete in the world, David Beckham, the Real Madrid roster includes superstars Ronaldo, Emerson, Roberto Carlos, Robinho and Cicinho from the Brazilian National Team, Raúl, captain of the Spanish National Team, and recently signed Italian mega-star, Italian captain and 2006 World Cup Champion member, Fabio Cannavaro.

August 19, 2006 12pm to 8pm @ Evergreen Speedway in Monroe - Professional Drifting Championship:
This high-skilled, high-powered motor sport where drivers intentionally maneuver their cars into well executed, controlled sideways slides at high speeds through a marked course, has more than 50 professional drivers competing in all six competitions this year.

September 6, 2006 7pm @ Marymoor Amphitheatre in Redmond - Matisyahu Concert:
Born in West Chester, PA and raised in White Plains, NY, the young man formerly known as Matthew Miller would undertake a monumental odyssey before discovering his path - and voice - as Matisyahu (the Hebrew equivalent of "Matthew," and the name he became known by when he became observant). Via adventures in Colorado, Israel, Oregon, and New York City, he not only heard a profound spiritual calling, but also discerned a revolutionary way to share his discoveries and reflections, via the reggae and hip-hop sounds that had long been an integral part of his day-to-day soundtrack.

Free International PC to Phone Calling in 60 Countries

Last time I evaluated the voice communication means available, I preferred Skype over Gizmo because of the better calling rates. Now the tables have turned. Recently Gizmo announced that you can call mobile numbers and landline numbers in these countries for free:

Canada
China
Cyprus
Guam
Hong Kong
Malawi
Malaysia
Puerto Rico
Russia
Saipan
San Marino
Singapore
South Korea
Thailand
United States
US Virgin Islands
Vatican City

Additionally, you can make calls from your PC to landline numbers in these countries for free:

Argentina
Australia
Austria
Belgium
Brazil
Bulgaria
Chile
Croatia
Czech Republic
Denmark
Estonia
Finland
France
French Antilles
Germany
Gibraltar
Greece
Guadeloupe
Hungary
Iceland
Ireland
Israel
Italy
Japan
Liechtenstein
Luxembourg
Monaco
Netherlands
New Zealand
Norway
Panama
Peru
Poland
Portugal
Slovenia
Spain
Sweden
Switzerland
Taiwan
Turkey
United Kingdom
Venezuela
Zambia

The only real caveat is that the mobile or landline number you are calling needs to be attached to a registered Gizmo user account. If you ask me, that is a small price to pay for free phone calls.

Skype is not sitting completely idle though. They have offered a series of free phone-call weekends throughout July to the UK, Mexico, and this weekend Japan. However, these offers are only available to people calling within the US or Canada.
